Fantastic Fourth-Grade Float Festival
Students learn the STEM process while studying an American tradition.
This week, Patch Elementary’s 4th graders brought creativity, engineering, and tradition together in their exciting “Balloons Over Broadway” project! After reading Balloons Over Broadway—the inspiring story behind the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade—students were challenged to design and build their very own parade floats at home.
Armed with imagination and the STEAM design process, students brainstormed ideas, sketched blueprints, selected materials, and engineered floats that were not only eye-catching but functional. Their final test? Each float had to successfully roll down the grand hallway to see which design could travel the farthest!
The hallway transformed into our very own parade route as students proudly debuted their creations. Some floats glided with ease, others took a few encouraging nudges, and all of them showcased the hard work and ingenuity of their creators.
In addition to the engineering challenge, this project connected to 4th grade social studies standards by exploring traditions—specifically how parades like Macy’s have shaped American cultural celebrations. Students learned how creativity and community come together to form lasting traditions that families look forward to year after year.
We are so proud of our 4th graders for their effort, innovation, and enthusiasm. Their floats brought joy to the entire school and reminded us of the magic that happens when learning comes to life!
