The great pumpkin drop 2025
Mr. Pieper, our super-strong assistant principal, used his super strength to hoist a pumpkin over the balcony.

Patch Elementary’s annual Pumpkin Drop soared to new heights this fall—literally! Several grade levels took part in this exciting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) challenge, working together to design and engineer boxes that could protect a pumpkin from a two-story drop.

Students collaborated in small groups to brainstorm, test, and refine their designs, applying real-world problem-solving skills and scientific thinking along the way. Creativity was everywhere as students brought in materials from home to cushion their pumpkins—everything from bubble wrap and empty plastic bottles to newspaper and even stuffed animals!

The event was once again expertly organized and supported by Ms. Edie Palladino-Thomas, a beloved 27-year Patch Elementary veteran teacher. Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Thomas shared,

“For over 25 years, the Pumpkin Drop has been a beloved tradition that brings our school community together. This hands-on STEAM challenge not only deepens learning but also strengthens the 4C’s—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication—skills essential for success in the 21st century.”

Cheers erupted as pumpkins were dropped and results revealed—some boxes kept their pumpkins perfectly intact, while others met a more “splat-tacular” end. Either way, the smiles and excitement proved that learning through experimentation and teamwork is what Patch spirit is all about!
