Dear Patch Families,

Hello and Welcome to Fall!

This week brought our first taste of fall weather, and with three days of indoor recess, it’s safe to say we’re all grateful the sun finally came out! It was wonderful to see students enjoying time outdoors again.

As the temperatures continue to drop and foggy mornings become more common, please remember to dress your child in layers. Warm jackets and coats are especially helpful during chilly mornings. On that note, we’ve noticed quite a few sweatshirts left behind and now hanging in our school foyer. If your child is missing one, feel free to stop by and take a look!

With the seasonal change, we’ve asked Nurse Natalie to share some helpful health tips in this week’s edition. Please take a moment to review her Nurse’s Section for important information.

We’re also excited to share that our team has received its first set of positive ICE comments—thank you! Your kind words mean so much to our staff. We’re proud of the amazing work our teachers are doing every day for our amazing students, and your feedback helps us celebrate that.

To improve communication with you, we’ve asked teachers to post additional announcements and updates in Google Classroom and/or SeeSaw. If you receive an invitation to join a Google Classroom, please accept it. These platforms will help keep you informed about what’s happening in your child’s classroom, the school, and the community—and they provide a direct line of communication with teachers.

Reminder: There will be no school on Monday. We hope you enjoy the long weekend with your family!

In service,
Dr. Quinland and Mr. Pieper

Every other Thursday, Patch Elementary students roll up their sleeves and dive into Math Boot Camp! These special sessions are designed to help students strengthen not only their problem-solving skills but also their ability to explain their thinking through clear, constructed responses.

Dear Patch ES families,

Now that autumn has arrived in full force, so have the germs. We’ve had a lot of sore throats, sniffles, coughing, and sneezing. Please help us keep all our students and staff healthy by encouraging students to wash hands, blow noses, and not share water bottles. Any fever of 100 degrees F or higher necessitates the student staying home until fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

Please review your contact information in Aspen as office numbers have changed, emergency contacts have moved, and other changes have occurred. If you need assistance, please call or email the front office.

As a reminder, any medication administered at school, whether administered in the nurse’s office or by the student, needs medication administration paperwork signed by a physician and parents. This includes inhalers, allergy medication, and over-the-counter medications. This form can be sent home with your student or emailed if requested.

We have recently learned that there are possible cases of pediculosis (head lice) in our community.  We would like to provide you with some useful resources for prevention, detection, and treatment of pediculosis.

Some common signs of head lice include:

  • Itching due to allergic reaction to lice bites
  • A tickling sensation of something moving in the hair.
  • Head sores because of scratching
  • Irritability

How can you prevent your student from getting lice?

  • Avoid head-to-head contact during school and at home.
  • Do not share hair accessories or clothing, especially for the head or upper body.
  • Do not share combs, brushes, or towels.
  • Check your students regularly for lice and nits (eggs) to catch an infestation early.

What do you do if your student has a louse?

  • DoDEA policy requires that students with active cases of pediculosis receive an over-the-counter treatment prior to returning to school and a second treatment 7-10 days later based on the product guidance.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to: Amy.Zesiger@dodea.edu for any questions or concerns.  Please complete and submit the attached form so we know your student has received treatment.
  • Continue to remove nits (eggs) between treatments so your student does not have re-infestation.
  • Machine wash and dry clothing, towels, bed linens and other items worn by a student infested with lice during the two days before treatment.  Use hot water (130F/55C) for washing and high heat for drying.  If you can’t wash items, seal them in a plastic bag for at least two weeks (based on life cycles).
  • Vacuum sofas, carpets, and car seats that the student may have sat on or laid on.
  • Disinfect combs and brushes in hot water (130F/55C) for at least 10 minutes.

It’s an absolute pleasure coming to work every day, and I truly enjoy my time with your children! As always, I am available by phone or email to assist in any way I can. We appreciate your partnership!

Respectfully,

Natalie Granatelli, RN

We’re excited to share that DoDEA has won the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Publications and Digital Media Excellence Award – Website Award of Merit for our School Newsletters Project! This NSPRA award honors outstanding school communication efforts that help connect schools with their communities. This wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our amazing school webmasters. Thank you for keeping families connected with your hard work and heart!
