Hello Patch ES Families!

Our Month-Long Read Across America event, led by our amazing PTA, has been a fantastic way to encourage our students' love for reading! Each week, students explore new genres through engaging activities, and this past week's Mystery Week was a huge success. Students enjoyed diving into suspenseful stories, a scavenger hunt, and uncovering clues! Next week, we shift our focus to Science Fiction and Non-Fiction Week, featuring special guest readers on Tuesday and exciting hands-on science experiments during recess, thanks to our dedicated PTA volunteers.

A quick reminder that next week will be a short week, as Friday is a professional development day for teachers.

Lastly, as we approach the end of the quarter and spring break, please communicate with your child’s teacher and the front office if you plan on an early start to vacation. Thank you for your continued support in making learning engaging and fun for our students!

In Service,

Dr. Quinland and Mr. Pieper

Nurse Notes Header

We have had a rough couple of weeks with illnesses. Currently we have Strep, Flu, bronchitis, and a stomach virus. There are other viruses that are causing fatigue, dizziness, sore throat, and a bad cough. If your child has any of these symptoms, please have them stay at home. Per DODEA guidelines if a student has any cold or flu-like symptoms, they should stay home. Giving them medication before coming to school will not help other students stay healthy.

Medications should also stay home unless they have come through the nurse's office with a doctor's note. Several students have come to class with medication in their pockets or bookbags. Medicine and cough drops are not allowed in school unless they are being given by their parents in front of the nurse or admin. It is not safe for kids to carry medication in their backpacks.

Our goal is to keep the community safe and healthy. Please reach out to me if you have any questions at Bethzaida.matos@dodea.edu. We hope you have a great and safe weekend.

Best Regards,

Nurse Bethzy

Crafting Apps with Creativity

Our third graders have embarked on an exciting project, designing their own app concepts! This initiative not only sparks their creativity but also aligns with the DoDEA College and Career Ready Standards (CCRS) for Language Arts, specifically standards L.3.4d and SL.3.1a. Students expanded their vocabulary by learning new terms related to app development and engaged in collaborative discussions to brainstorm and refine their ideas.

Each student began by brainstorming an app idea, sketching interfaces, and writing descriptions and instructions. This process helped them practice their writing skills and communicate their ideas clearly. The project culminated in a "Tech Fair" where students presented their app designs, showcasing their hard work and practicing public speaking.

This project has ignited an interest in technology among our third graders and equipped them with valuable skills in vocabulary development and collaborative communication. By integrating the DoDEA CCRS standards into this creative endeavor, we are preparing our students for a future where technology and language arts go hand in hand.

Book Bliss: Basking in Read Across America

This month, our school is excited to celebrate Read Across America (RAA)! This annual event encourages students to develop a love for reading through a variety of fun and engaging activities. Our amazing PTA has planned a different theme every week to get students engaged and excited. From themed dress-up days to guest readers and fun activities, our students are immersed in the joy of reading and discovering new stories.

RAA is not just about celebrating books; it's about instilling a lifelong love of reading in our students. By participating in these activities, students are developing their literacy skills, expanding their imaginations, and building a foundation for academic success. During RAA, we are reminded of the power of reading to open doors to new worlds and endless possibilities!

Hello Patch Families!

Since our last PE update our 2nd-5th students have been having a blast using our scooters! We have played both Scooter Soccer and Scooter Basketball while rolling around on the scooters. After every class the students always complain how their legs and stomach are so tired! Not only are we developing their muscular and cardiovascular endurance while using the scooters, but we are also teaching them how to use basic offensive and defensive strategies to attack and protect the goal. This includes the student moving on a scooter to get open to receive a pass, as well as moving on a scooter to block a pass. The highlight of each lesson was seeing the student’s teamwork. Each team was required to make at least 3 passes before they attempted to score. The students quickly correlated how their team work would directly lead to team success.

Kindergarten and 1st grade used the Parachute for the first time this school year. They get hyped when they walk into the gym and see the Parachute laying on the floor! There are so many things we can teach with the Parachute. Not only are we strengthening their arms and shoulders, but we are also working on cooperation with fellow classmates, turn-taking, and listening to verbal instructions. All these components are vital to the future units we do in the upper grades. By far the favorite Parachute game the students love is “Igloo.” Ask your child what they do for “Igloo” and I know they will be excited to share with you.

Our current focus in PE for all grades is throwing and catching. This week 2nd-5th grade played a game called Kan Jam to work on their throwing technique and accuracy. This is a “backyard” game that the whole family can enjoy on a Saturday during a barbecue.  Kan Jam is a lead up game for Handball, which we will introduce next week.

Kindergarten and 1st grade are also working on throwing and catching in stations but we are teaching through manipulatives. Manipulatives help students learn how to handle and control objects with precision, accuracy, and fluidity. These manipulatives include using a hula-hoop to play games like “Head or Tails” or “Walk the Dog” and twirling ribbons in the air to work on spelling the alphabet and writing numbers.

Since the weather is going to be nice this weekend, if you fire up your grill, ask your child to play Kan Jam and see if they can teach you! All you need is a ball and a bucket. Have a wonderful weekend!
