Dear Patch Elementary Families,
April is a month full of exciting events and important activities at Patch Elementary! Here’s what’s happening:
Month of the Military Child
We are proud to celebrate the Month of the Military Child, recognizing the unique sacrifices and contributions of our military-connected students. Let's honor their resilience and strength throughout April. On April 9, we "Purpled Up" by wearing purple to support our students. The PTA is sponsoring several events this month as well where students and staff can wear their official Patch ES Month of the Military Child shirts. For more information, please visit their Facebook page or go to their section in this newsletter.
2nd Annual Color Run
Speaking of exciting events, get ready for some colorful fun! The PTA is sponsoring our 2nd Annual Color Run on Friday, April 18th. This event is a fantastic way to promote fitness and community spirit. Students will participate during their lunch recess.
Assistant Principal Week
We were proud and excited to celebrate Assistant Principal Week and recognize the hard work and dedication of Mr. Pieper. Thank you, Mr. Pieper, for all you do to support our students and staff!
Re-registration
Congratulations to Ms. Gradeck's first grade class for being the first class to reach 100% for re-registration/withdrawal! Grade levels still have a chance to win a popsicle party by reaching 100% for the entire neighborhood. Make sure you log into the Aspen Parent Portal to re-register and visit the office for information if your student is withdrawing.
3rd Quarter Awards
On Friday, 4th and 5th grade students were recognized for their academic, artistic, and behavioral achievements. We had SO many students in the A and A/B Honor Rolls that they could barely fit on the stage! Keep up the amazing effort and let's continue this momentum into 4th quarter.
DCAS Testing
Along with being the last quarter of the school year, 4th quarter also brings testing time. DCAS testing is approaching quickly! Here are the dates:
- 3rd Grade: April 21-25
- 4th & 5th Grades: May 5-8
Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast on testing days. For more information, contact your child's teacher.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Together, we make Patch Elementary a wonderful place to learn and grow.
In Service,
Dr. Quinland and Mr. Pieper

Purple Up, Up, and Away!: Celebrating Month of the Military Child
April is a special month at Patch Elementary School as we celebrate the Month of the Military Child. This annual observance recognizes the unique challenges and sacrifices faced by children in military and military-connected families, and our school community has come together to honor them in various fun and meaningful ways.
Purple Up Day was a vibrant start to our celebrations. Students and staff dressed in purple, the color symbolizing all branches of the military, to show their support and appreciation for military children. The school was a sea of purple, with everyone proudly wearing their outfits and accessories.
Following Purple Up Day, students had the chance to dress like heroes. This included both superheroes and everyday heroes such as firefighters, police officers, doctors, and military personnel. The hallways were filled with capes, uniforms, and smiles as students celebrated the heroes in their lives.
Throughout the month, the PTA has organized a series of exciting events to engage students and families. These events include:
- Color Run: A fun and energetic event where participants run through clouds of colorful powder, celebrating the vibrancy and resilience of military children.
- Obstacle Course: Designed to challenge and entertain, this course encourages teamwork and perseverance, qualities that are essential for military families.
- Family Night: An evening filled with games, food, and activities, providing an opportunity for families to connect and enjoy quality time together.
- More Activities: Additional events and activities are planned throughout the month, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Being a military-connected student overseas comes with its own set of unique experiences and challenges. These students often adapt to new cultures, languages, and environments, demonstrating remarkable resilience and flexibility. Despite the frequent moves and changes, they build strong, supportive communities and develop a global perspective that enriches their lives. At Patch Elementary School, we are dedicated to celebrating and supporting these incredible students, ensuring they feel valued and appreciated for their strength and adaptability. Their journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of community, and we are proud to be a part of their story.

April is National Poetry Month, and students are experiencing the beauty and power of poetry. This month-long celebration is dedicated to appreciating poets and their work, encouraging students to explore and express themselves through verse.
Mr. A is incorporating poetry read-alouds in his weekly library lessons. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the rhythm, emotion, and creativity of poetry.
Patch Elementary School Library is proud to celebrate National Poetry Month and foster a love for poetry among our students. Poetry is a powerful tool for self-expression and creativity, and we are excited to see our students explore and grow through this beautiful art form.

As we enter allergy season, we want to ensure the health and well-being of all our students. If your child has known allergies or has been newly diagnosed with allergies, please inform the school nurse as soon as possible. This will help us provide the necessary support and care for your child during school hours.
Additionally, we have noticed several cases of pink-eye (conjunctivitis) among students. To prevent the spread of this infection, we kindly ask you to remind your children to wash their hands frequently and avoid touching their eyes.
Here are some tips for managing allergies:
- Avoid allergens: Try to minimize exposure to known allergens, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander.
- Keep windows closed: During high pollen seasons, keep windows closed to prevent allergens from entering your home.
- Use air purifiers: Consider using air purifiers to reduce indoor allergens.
- Wash hands and face: Encourage your child to wash their hands and face after being outside to remove allergens.
- Medications: Ensure your child takes any prescribed allergy medications regularly.
- Clean regularly: Regularly clean and vacuum your home to reduce dust and other allergens.
Reminder: All medications needed at school should be processed through the school nurse. This ensures proper administration and safety for all students.
Our goal is to maintain a safe and healthy community. If you have any questions, please contact me at Bethzaida.matos@dodea.edu. We hope you have a great and safe weekend.
