Dear Patch Elementary Families,
We wrapped up a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week with heartfelt celebrations! Our amazing teachers were treated to delicious food and massages from the PTA, refreshing slushies and flowers from admin, and a truly unforgettable series of flash mobs, prepared over the last two weeks by Ms. Roos with each grade level. The students’ surprise performances brought big smiles and joyful energy throughout the school! Thank you to our incredible elementary teachers for the passion, creativity, and care they bring to their classrooms each day. Their dedication to students does not go unnoticed. The entire school community is truly grateful for all that they do.
As we close out our week of testing, please note that make-up sessions will be scheduled for any students who were absent -- details are forthcoming.
A huge shout-out to everyone involved in this week’s Art Showcase—it was an incredible success! Families and staff enjoyed a beautiful evening filled with music and student artwork from every grade level.
Looking ahead to next week, we’ve got a busy schedule with field trips for 3rd and 4th grades, the Presidential and Commanders Awards ceremony on Friday, and the much-anticipated Kindy 500 event.
Lastly, with warmer weather on the way, be sure to check the forecast to help students come to school dressed appropriately. Thank you for your continued support as we finish the school year strong!
In Service,
Dr. Quinland and Mr. Pieper

Final Applause: Parent Positions for the Big Clap-Out!
Our annual clap-out is on June 10 at 10:45 AM, the last day of school. This year, students will be exiting out of their arrival doors. All students will walk through the corral towards the playground side of the campus, continuing through to the fire lane and up the ramp. Parents should line the fire lane on each side to clap and cheer for students as they leave the 2024-2025 school year behind. If you have any questions, please let us know!

Marble-ous Engineering in Action
This week, our creative 4th graders took on an exciting STEM challenge: building marble runs using only recyclable materials like paper towel tubes, toilet paper rolls, paper plates, and tape! The goal was to design a stable structure that could guide a marble from start to finish without it falling off the track. Students worked in collaborative teams, using their imaginations and problem-solving skills to plan, test, and improve their designs. The neighborhood was full of energy as marbles zipped through tunnels and ramps!
This hands-on project was more than just fun—it was a lesson in physics! Students applied Newton’s Laws of Motion and explored key 4th grade science standards related to force, motion, and energy. They learned how gravity pulls the marble down the track, how friction can slow it down, and how a well-placed incline can speed it up. By testing and adjusting their marble runs, students discovered how science and engineering go hand in hand. Great job, 4th grade engineers!

5th Graders Mix It Up with Super Science Stations!
Our curious 5th graders recently rotated through a series of exciting science stations to explore the fascinating world of mixtures and solutions. Each hands-on activity brought science to life in a fun and memorable way! Students got messy with oobleck, a mysterious substance that acts like both a solid and a liquid, and watched in awe as vinegar and baking soda reacted to inflate a balloon using gas. These experiments helped students understand the differences between physical and chemical changes, and how matter can behave in surprising ways.
The learning didn’t stop there! At another station, students explored the glowing science behind neon glowsticks, discovering how energy can be released as light. Each station was designed to reinforce key 5th grade science standards while sparking curiosity and creativity. Whether they were mixing, measuring, or marveling at chemical reactions, our young scientists were fully engaged and excited to learn with teachers and volunteers there to support them. Way to go, 5th grade—your enthusiasm for science really shines!

As we enter allergy season, we want to ensure the health and well-being of all our students. If your child has known allergies or has been newly diagnosed with allergies, please inform the school nurse as soon as possible. This will help us provide the necessary support and care for your child during school hours.
Additionally, we have noticed several cases of pink-eye (conjunctivitis) among students. To prevent the spread of this infection, we kindly ask you to remind your children to wash their hands frequently and avoid touching their eyes.
Here are some tips for managing allergies:
- Avoid allergens: Try to minimize exposure to known allergens, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander.
- Keep windows closed: During high pollen seasons, keep windows closed to prevent allergens from entering your home.
- Use air purifiers: Consider using air purifiers to reduce indoor allergens.
- Wash hands and face: Encourage your child to wash their hands and face after being outside to remove allergens.
- Medications: Ensure your child takes any prescribed allergy medications regularly.
- Clean regularly: Regularly clean and vacuum your home to reduce dust and other allergens.
Reminder: All medications needed at school should be processed through the school nurse. This ensures proper administration and safety for all students.
Our goal is to maintain a safe and healthy community. If you have any questions, please contact me at Bethzaida.matos@dodea.edu. We hope you have a great and safe weekend.
