Dear Patch Elementary Families,
As we wrap up an incredible school year, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your continued support, enthusiasm, and partnership. It has truly been an honor working with this amazing community, and I’m so proud of all that our students, staff, and families have accomplished together.
Before we head into summer, I’d like to share a few tips to help prevent the “summer slide”—that tendency for students to lose some of the academic gains they made during the school year. Here are a few simple ways to keep young minds active and engaged:
- Read daily – Whether it’s a favorite book, a comic, or an audiobook, reading helps keep vocabulary and comprehension skills sharp.
- Practice math in everyday life – Cooking, shopping, and travel all offer great opportunities to use math in real-world ways.
- Encourage writing – A fun way to do this is by having your child keep a travel journal over the summer! Whether you're going on a big trip or just exploring the area, writing about daily adventures helps build strong writing habits. Encourage them to use the RACER strategy (Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, Explain, and Restate) to organize their thoughts clearly.
Also, don’t forget that all of our digital learning tools will remain available through Classlink over the summer! Students can continue exploring and learning with:
- Khan Academy
- EduTyping
- Discovery Education
- ...and many more!
A huge thank you to Mr. Tipton and all of our amazing volunteers for organizing a fantastic Field Day event! It was a joyful celebration of teamwork, fun, and school spirit—what a great way to end the year!
As we look ahead to next school year, we’re filled with excitement and optimism. Thank you for making this year so special. We wish you a safe, relaxing, and adventure-filled summer!
In Service,
Dr. Quinland and Mr. Pieper

Field Day Frenzy: Fun, Friends, and Frozen Treats!
This week, our elementary students enjoyed two fantastic Field Days—one for PreK through 2nd grades and another for 3rd through 5th grades. Despite rain in the forecast, we were lucky to have clear skies and sunshine for both events! Students had a blast participating in a variety of games, including rock-paper-scissors tag, sack races, the three-legged race, cone flipping, tug-o-war, and relay races. Laughter and cheers filled the air as students showed off their teamwork and sportsmanship.
To help everyone cool off, a popsicle station was a big hit with students and staff alike. A huge thank you goes out to all the amazing volunteers who helped make these days run smoothly. And a special shout-out to our incredible PE teacher, Mr. Tipton, for organizing and planning such memorable events for our school community!

As we are coming closer to the end of the school year, I wanted to remind those who have medications in the nurse's office should have them picked up by no later than June 9th. I will not be in the office from June 9th, as it will be my last day in the nurse's office. As a reminder if you did a new medication form this year, it is good for one calendar year. Also, most medications cannot be sent home with the student and parents must pick up the medication. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at Bethzaida.matos@dodea.edu. I will be sending out email reminders in the next few weeks as well. Have a great week!
